Framed or unframed? An honest comparison

A frame roughly doubles the price of a print. Sometimes that is obviously worth it, and sometimes it is the wrong place to spend the money.

We sell both and we are not neutral about which suits which situation, so here is the actual trade-off rather than a pitch.

What it costs

SizeUnframedBlack frameDifference
A5₹99₹219+₹120
A4₹149₹319+₹170
A3₹169₹519+₹350

At A3 the frame costs more than twice the print. That is the number to hold in mind — you are mostly buying a frame, with a poster included.

When a frame is worth it

  • It is a gift. An unframed print reads as something the recipient now has to deal with; a framed one is finished and can go straight on a wall.
  • It is the only print on that wall. A single unframed A3 on a large empty wall tends to look provisional. A frame gives it an edge and an intention.
  • It is going somewhere people stand close to — a hallway, beside a desk. Frames hold paper flat; unframed prints eventually curl at the corners in humidity.

When it is not

  • A dense gallery wall. Twenty framed prints is both very expensive and visually noisy — the frames start competing with the artwork. Grids look better unframed.
  • A hostel or shared room. Frames need hooks or nails, and they are the thing that breaks when you move out.
  • You want to change the wall often. Unframed prints can be swapped in a minute for ₹99–₹169.

A middle option people miss: frame one A3 as the anchor and surround it with unframed A4s. You get the finished look at the centre and the coverage around it, at a fraction of framing everything.

About shipping

Framed prints ship in a rigid box and unframed A3s ship rolled in a postal tube. The tube is genuinely safer — nothing in it can crack. If a framed print does arrive damaged, send a photo within 48 hours and we replace it, with nothing to post back.

The acrylic option

For a single statement piece there is a third choice: printed on 5mm acrylic, which is frameless, has depth to it, and does not behave like paper at all. It costs considerably more than a framed print and is the thing people photograph.
